De Young unveils more efficient home innovations
De Young Properties wants to be at the forefront of energy-saving home designs.
The Central Valley homebuilder in 2010 started introducing high energy-efficient homes with things like tankless water heaters and cool roof tiles. Three years later, De Young built a zero net energy concept home with better technology and solar panels to yield even higher efficiency results.
Then, Brandon De Young, the company’s executive vice president, started researching ways to do more. On Saturday, the company will unveil its new SmartHome Icon Series during a pre-grand opening event for Sierra Crest, a new community on Armstrong Avenue, just south of Alluvial Avenue in Clovis.
The new home designs include a Performance Sealed Attic, Advanced Framed Walls and a SolarCity 20-year fully pre-paid solar lease.
“Homes have been the same for far too long,” De Young said. “It’s really new – a fresh design.”
Here’s a look at the new features:
▪ A performance sealed attic moves the insulation from the ceiling of a home to the roofline. Typically, insulation stops at the ceiling while the HVAC system and ductwork sits on top exposed to attic space that heats up when temperatures rise. Now, the entire attic is insulated.
▪ The advanced wall framing design uses 2-by-6 wood studs instead of the typical 2-by-4 lumber to provide thicker and deeper exterior walls allowing for more insulation. De Young is also maximizing insulation space by getting rid of wasted wood in corners and dead space between connecting walls.
▪ All homes will come with a fully pre-paid solar system from Solar City. The national solar provider will use its new Silevo panels on the homes. De Young has in the past offered buyers a solar system as an option with a monthly lease. The cost of the system is now included in the price of an Icon Series home.
“We are committed to providing our homebuyers the most advanced energy-efficient technology and believe that the Icon Series will not only accomplish that, but set the standard for how homes will be built for years to come,” De Young said.
The first phase of Sierra Crest will have 20 homes. At build out, the community will have 39. Prices start in the low $300,000s.
