After barbering for seven years at Aguilar’s Barber Shop, Freddie Lamas Jr. opened his own barbershop May 7 in east-central Fresno.
Fademasters Barbershop is small, with only three barber chairs and two barbers — including Lamas. The plan was to open with three barbers but one backed out, leaving Lamas still looking for another barber to fill the gap.
Still, business is brisk. Lamas’ clients from Aguilar’s followed him to his new location and he spread the word to new customers via fliers, Facebook and Instagram, he said.
Weekdays, the barbers serve eight to 12 customers, with weekends bringing in 15 or more. Within the past two months Fademasters has made about $5,000. Fademasters Barbershop’s cuts are regularly priced at $15, with $10 specials Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
It was always Lamas’ goal to open his own barbershop, and he just felt ready financially to do so. His family was supportive, helping out with the barbecue he held at the shop’s grand opening.
It was a risk to open, but Lamas feels it has paid off.
“It’s just the freedom of having your own shop,” he said. “Knowing that it’s yours, you take care of it.”
The new goal is to expand in the future, adding more barbers and more chairs for clients, he said.
