Dollar General, the Tennessee-based chain of discount stores, is continuing its expansion in the central San Joaquin Valley with the opening of a new store in Fowler.
The store at 108 N. 8th St. officially opened its doors April 11, offering prizes including gift cards and tote bags as well as special opening-day deals to customers. The location is on the west side of Golden State Boulevard just north of Merced Street, the main drag off of Highway 99 through downtown Fowler.
Despite the store’s name, not everything is priced at $1, but its roster of national brand food, household products and health/beauty products is typically discounted below most major retailers. Dollar General spans 43 states with more than 11,800 stores and says it has more stores than any other retailer in the U.S.
Dollar General launched an unsuccessful bid last year to buy another discount retailer, North Carolina-based Family Dollar, for as much as $9.1 billion. But Family Dollar declined that offer, opting instead to sell to the competing Dollar Tree chain in a deal expected to close in May following a review by the Federal Trade Commission.

With the opening of a store in the Madera Ranchos area last month and last weekend’s opening in Fowler, Dollar General now has 18 stores scattered across Fresno, Kings, Madera and Tulare counties. The company says that its stores typically employ between six and 10 people.
