More than 3,400 students from across the state are coming to Fresno this weekend for the 2015 California YMCA Youth & Government Conference in downtown Fresno.
The YMCA event, which starts Saturday and wraps up Monday, is part of its training & elections program in advance of its five-day Model Legislature and Court Conference this spring in Sacramento. Prior training conferences had been held at Camp Roberts in Sacramento, but the YMCA indicated that the National Guard facility did not provide sufficient handicap accessibility and that the program had outgrown the site.
The Fresno/Clovis Convention & Visitors Bureau said the YMCA event “is the second largest convention event that has chosen Fresno County as their meeting destination.” The event is expected to book more than 2,000 room-nights in at least nine local hotels and generate about $650,000 in economic effects in the community, including spending on lodging and restaurants.
On their website, YMCA Youth & Government organizers said they will evaluate the success of the conference and determine whether to sign a three-year contract to continue bringing the event to Fresno.
