A drunken man who ran in and out of traffic in an attempt to flee from law enforcement was arrested Tuesday, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

But it’s what happened while the man was being detained that’s caught many people’s attention and turned a video of the incident viral on social media.

As suspect Robert Jimenez was apprehended by two police officers, one of the officers strikes him multiple times, as shown on the video shot by William Catalan while on a bus.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 34th Street and Union Avenue.

Jimenez, 39, faces misdemeanor charges for public intoxication, suspicion resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

None of the officers involved were injured, police said. The Bakersfield California reported that a routine administrative review has begun because force was used to take Jimenez into custody.

Catalan’s video had been viewed more than 132,000 times as of Wednesday evening.
