The cost of veterinary and pet wellness care is rapidly rising. According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), pet owners spent $34.3 billion on veterinary care and related products in 2021 – an increase of 8.9% from the previous year. Pet health insurance policies offer pet parents a way to offset some of the high costs of pet healthcare. If you own a dog or cat, Pumpkin Pet plans provide accident, illness and preventative care insurance.

Pumpkin FAQs

Does Pumpkin cover behavioral issues?

chevron-down
chevron-up
Pumpkin covers behavioral issues such as aggression, anxiety, and anxiety-related issues like excessive chewing and licking. Pumpkin may also cover behavioral training services provided by a veterinarian or company-approved licensed behaviorist. Take note that Pumpkin bases their approval on medical records. If your pet's medical records show the behaviors existed prior to the 14-day waiting period, Pumpkin may consider it a pre-existing condition and your pet won't be eligible for coverage.

Does Pumpkin policy cover pre-existing conditions?

chevron-down
chevron-up
Pumpkin doesn't cover pre-existing conditions. The company considers a pre-existing condition to be "conditions or symptoms that exist or appear before or during the 14-day waiting period". If a condition is treatable and can be healed, such as a broken bone, and your pet hasn't had a reappearance of the condition for 180 days, it would be eligible for future coverage.

Does Pumpkin have restrictions on cancellation policies?

chevron-down
chevron-up
You can cancel your policy at any time. However, refunds depend on your location and whether you have claims in process. If you live in New York, your refund will be prorated for the remainder of the month you've paid. For customers outside of New York, you must cancel within 30 days and not have any claims filed to get a full refund of your annual policy. If you have a claim filed, you will receive a prorated refund for the remainder of the month you've paid. You can also cancel the Preventative Essentials add-on and keep the Pumpkin Pet Insurance plan.

How can I file a claim on Pumpkin pet insurance?

chevron-down
chevron-up
Filing a claim with Pumpkin is relatively straightforward. First, you must log into your online account. Under "Claims," you'll submit your claim information and proof of your itemized vet bill, plus any other important medical records that will support your claim. Once you submit your claim, you can track the claim status online. Pumpkin also lets policyholders file printed claims via regular mail.

Does Pumpkin pet insurance have a dental policy?

Pumpkin has a dental policy that includes exams, x-rays, treatments, surgery, medication, and tooth extraction. Pumpkin doesn't cover dental cleanings and orthodontic or cosmetic procedures.

We reviewed Pumpkin for coverage, exclusions, reimbursement, annual deductibles, and coverage limits. We looked at sample policies and received quotes through the company’s online portal using a variety of locations, pet sizes, and ages. We also reviewed competitor websites for comparable information. To assess customer service, we contacted Pumpkin at various times by email, phone and chat, and evaluated their response times, knowledge and friendliness. Summary of Miami Herald’s Pumpkin review

As far as pet insurance companies go, Pumpkin is a solid choice if you’re looking for the security of comprehensive accident and illness coverage. While Pumpkin doesn’t offer a wide variety of plan customization through add-ons, their Preventative Essentials package stands out for its affordability and coverage of annual preventative care basics. Pumpkin only offers plans for dogs and cats, and their plans are slightly higher-priced than the competition. However, their coverage is extensive, they’re transparent with plan details and pricing information, and claim processes are simple, with quick turnaround times.
