Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month events
The state Legislature proclaimed November Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month to help recognize Sikh Americans’ contributions to California and help people better understand the culture of their Sikh neighbors.
The Sikh Council of Central California, representing 11 Sikh gurdwaras (Sikh temples), is hosting two activities to celebrate. Leaders of the Sikh community will be joined by Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, when they donate more than $21,000 to the Poverello House at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and then will help serve lunch. The Sikh community has donated more than $120,000 in the last six years to the Poverello House. Later in the day, professor Rahuldeep Singh Gill, a campus interfaith strategist at California Lutheran University, will speak at 7 p.m. at the Sikh Institute, 4827 N. Parkway Drive, Fresno.
On Sunday, members of the Sikh Council will talk about progress made in increasing the community’s knowledge of Sikh people at 10:30 a.m. at the Selma Sikh Temple, 2211 Highland Ave., Selma. Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims will be in attendance.
