Disneyland offers $250 build-your-own lightsaber experience for free - with one big catch

Disneyland visitors who have always wanted to try the $250 lightsaber building experience in Savi's Workshop without footing the bill or having to lug the Jedi Knight weapon all over the Anaheim theme park will now get their chance.

Disneyland will offer a free Youngling Saber Building experience through Sept. 7 at Savi's Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

The limited time Youngling Saber Building experience is recommended for kids ages 3 to 9 years old, but visitors of any age can give it a try (with or without children).

Youngling Saber Building lets Disneyland visitors take part in the 20-minute interactive experience with one big catch: You don't get to take home the lightsaber you build.

The lightsaber building experience typically costs $250. The paid experience at Savi's is from 2-9 p.m. requires reservations, which are available on the Disneyland website and mobile app. A Savi's Workshop reservation is good for a builder and two guests.

The free Youngling Saber Building experience will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with only walk-up availability. Disneyland admission is required to get into Galaxy's Edge and to participate in the free lightsaber building workshop.

Kids who take part in Youngling Saber Building will become members of the Loth-Cat Crew, which should help soften the blow when parents tell their kids they can't keep the lightsaber they just made.

Of course, Disneyland will gladly sell you the lightsaber your kid just built if their begging and pleading manages to persuade you at the end of the free experience.

Kids taking part in the Youngling Saber Building experience must be accompanied by an adult.

The free lightsaber building experience is part of Disneyland's Kids Rule Summer event that runs through Sept. 7 with kids parkhopper tickets that are available for $50 a day.

The handbuilt lightsaber shop near the entrance to Batuu is run by space junkyard owner Savi, according to the backstory created for Black Spire Outpost. The scrapper has been collecting lightsaber pieces salvaged from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships from throughout the galaxy in hopes a true hero with the ability to assemble the parts will one day enter the shop.

The up-charge lightsaber-building experience is led by the Gatherers in the Chamber of the Guardians. A small group of 14 builders enter the chamber for each of the intimate build-your-own lightsaber experiences.
