Jon Brent wasn't surprised when his KSEE (Channel 24.1) contract wasn't renewed.
"I kind of knew that it was coming. When a station doesn't want to keep people like Rich Rodriguez, Jim Guy, Alexan Balekian and Jennifer Brice, then people like me are a dying breed at that station," Brent says.
His last day at the local NBC affiliate was Dec. 31.
Brent's not bitter about the job ending because he knows it was a bad economic year and "that means making tough decisions."

He's optimistic the end of his KSEE contract will open other doors for him.
The Fresno native wants to stay in the area and champion the city he loves. He's just not certain if his next job will be in television, radio or community service.
"All I know is this Valley needs advocates. I'm a real advocate for this region. This community needs people like me," Brent says. "I also would like to mentor young people. If I can give them some positive direction, that's what life's all about."
Brent applied for, but did not get, the KSEE news director job open since Geoff Roth left in July to become a professor at Hofstra University.
Matt Rosenfeld, KSEE president and general manager, didn't return calls inquiring about the decision.
Brent, who started at KSEE in 2003, previously worked in TV in the Sacramento and Waco/Bryan, Texas, markets and in radio in San Francisco, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, N.C., Austin, Texas, and Fresno.
November Nielsen TV ratings show that KFSN (Channel 30.1) continues its long-running domination while KSEE is still having trouble attracting viewers.
KFSN has the most-watched news in every time period where it goes head-to-head with another local TV station's news program.
Its biggest success is at 5 p.m. with more than 82,000 viewers 18 years and older.
KSEE is a distant second with 16,000 viewers and KGPE (Channel 47.1) in third with 10,000 viewers.
KMPH (Channel 26.1) continues to attract strong ratings at 10 p.m. weeknights with an average of 52,000 viewers. It competes against scripted and reality programming on the other networks.
KSEE has made several big moves to lure more viewers, including adding a 7 p.m. weeknight news program. That program is averaging only 3,000 viewers.
On the air: The Clovis East and Modesto Christian high schools' basketball game will kick off the Comcast Hometown Network's telecasts of Northern and Central California basketball games.
The game airs at 7 p.m. Saturday on Comcast's Channel 104.
It also will be available on Comcast's On Demand.
