A couple of visual arts picks for the weekend:
The event: This will be your last chance to see three vigorous exhibitions that have been attracting crowds at Arte Américas. These shows are closing Saturday, Aug. 20: “South of the Grapevine: Connecting Creative Communities,” a group show featuring prominent Southern California artists; “Fabulas de Esopo,” works by Oaxacan master artist Francisco Toledo; and “Sharp Curves and Soft Edges,” works by Samantha Lazcano.
The draw: I wandered through the galleries a couple of weeks ago and was attracted by the diversity and energy of all three shows – a real abundance of riches (and some big Southern California artist names). “South of the Grapevine,” for example, was curated in-house and also with the help of four Southern California-based curators (Cheryl Bookout, Andrew Cervantes, Kathleen Gallegos, and Amanda Quinn-Olivar). Some of L.A.’s most respected and celebrated contemporary artists are represented, according to the cultural center.
Two artists to look for: “THE$E AR3 A FEW OF MY FAVE THANGZ” is by The Phantom Street Artist, a “kultural revisionist” who uses the familiar Jack in the Box advertising campaign as pointed social commentary; and works by Ann Le, whose eerie/ghostly photography-collage portraits – in which skin is replaced by graphic patterns – explore the cultural and political significance of the Vietnam War.
A tip: Follow Arte Américas on Facebook to keep up with an abundance of events, including art, concerts, lectures, guided tours and social events.

The event: To mark the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, Oakhurst’s Stellar Gallery presents “Our Yosemite: Personal Visions of Yosemite National Park” featuring work by the gallery’s photographers.
The draw: The lineup of experienced photographers is impressive, with works featured by Jon Bock, Jerry Bosworth, Michael J. Costa, Michael Frye, Franka Gabler, Jeff Grandy, David Hoffman, Cathy McCrery-Cordle, Steve Montalto, William Neill and Nancy Robbins.
