▪ Congratulations: Music professor Mike Dana of Fresno City College is up for a 2016 special Grammy award for the nation’s top music educator. Dana is one of 25 national semifinalists for the award, which recognizes kindergarten through college educators who have made “a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education.” More than 4,500 initial nominations were received. Ten finalists will be announced in December. If Dana is the ultimate winner, he’ll be honored during next year’s Grammy telecast.
▪ Family-friendly: The Central Valley Community Foundation (formerly the Fresno Regional Foundation) is sponsoring “Arts at the Fairgrounds” 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Madera District Fairgrounds. The free event includes folklorico performances by the Kings Cultural Center, an interactive contemporary art exhibit by the Center for Lao Studies and interactive mobile mural painting by Creative Fresno. ▪ Intimate setting: Fresno Grand Opera kicks off its recital series on Thursday, Nov. 12, featuring two singers well known to area theater fans: Terry Lewis and Sara Price.
