The CURTAIN 5 TheatreGROUP continues its emphasis on presenting original works by local playwrights when it kicks off its 2016 season Friday, Jan. 29, with two plays written by winners of the Roosevelt School of the Arts Playwriting Competition.
“Vuelos” is a drama by Onyx Beytia, a junior at Roosevelt. It follows a father and daughter temporarily stranded with car trouble in the pampas of Argentina. They try to navigate through their generational differences of Old World values vs. modern sensibilitities. Jerry Palladino directs.
“Necromancin’ Around” is a comedy by Cyrus Kinzel, who graduated from Roosevelt last year and is now a freshman at Fresno State. It is about a clever teenage student who has uncanny conjuring powers to beckon up a variety of spirits to do his trigonometry homework. R.S. Scott directs.
The plays are the first two of four student-written winners to be performed this season of the Roosevelt competition. (The second set will be performed in August.) The company plans nine productions in 2016, seven of them written by local writers.
