These doctors make opera-house calls.
The California Opera Summer Opera Arts and Education Festival continues for a third weekend with an intriguing highlight: a concert titled “Doctors at the MET.” (That’s MET as in Mercedes Edwards Theatre in Clovis, not the Metropolitan Opera in New York.) Three notable physicians affiliated with Saint Agnes Medical Center— all diligent amateur opera singers and supporters of California Opera — will perform.
The concert is a benefit for the Saint Agnes library. Like all California Opera events, the performance (7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8) is free with donations accepted.
Dr. Harvey Edmonds, Dr. Marshall Flam and Dr. Don Gaede will perform light-hearted and serious opera selections with festival artists. For example, Flam will sing the “La ci darem la mano” duet from “Don Giovanni” with Chinese singer Yuxi Liu.
Two other weekend festival events:
▪ “A Night in Asia” (7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the Fresno Art Museum) showcases the musical influences of Asia, Russia and the Far East.
▪ “Operalia” (2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Fresno Art Museum) features the best of American and Italian opera, including “The Ballad of Baby Doe,” “I Pagliacci” and “La Traviata.”
