Artists you should know: A Current Affair

A lot is happening for local band A Current Affair right now.

The group is playing this weekend at the Spirit West Coast festival in Monterey.

Then it's back home for a CD-release show at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at The 210, 210 W. Center St., Visalia. Tickets cost $6 in advance or $7 at the door.

In August, A Current Affair -- Jordan Feliz (vocals), Josh Mendoza (guitar) James Isaak (guitar), Joey Rotella (bass) and Nick Cantrell (drums) -- is playing the Fresno date of the Vans Warped Tour and touring around the West Coast. We talked to Rotella to learn more.

It's been a couple years since we last talked to you, what's been going on with A Current Affair? Well, pretty much just touring and stuff. We have been on some pretty cool tours, in my opinion, so it's definitely been fun.

For the unfamiliar, describe the band's sound. I think the best way to describe it is just straight-up rock.

When you Google the band, you guys come up before "A Current Affair" the TV show. How awesome is that? I'll be honest, I had to do it myself because I didn't believe you. That's pretty sweet.

What should people expect from the EP you guys have coming out? Our new EP, "The Real Devastation," is a little different from our last one. This one doesn't have any screaming, and hopefully shows how we have matured as a band since we released "Life in an Hourglass" two years ago. It's got some parts that are rock 'n' roll, some that are a little dancey, and some slower stuff. I think it has a little something for everyone.

You're already on the Fresno Warped Tour date this year. How'd you score that? We basically won the spot through a Web site called It's a DIY site that has a bunch of networking tools for bands, and the whole point was to utilize the site and get your fans involved. After about four months they announced the winning bands for each stop on the tour, and we happened to get it. I know we are all really looking forward to it. I personally had to keep myself from screaming like a 5-year-old girl.

What else should people look forward to from A Current Affair in the future? We have our EP-release show on Aug. 7 at the 210 in Visalia. After that, hopefully just a whole lot more touring. We have been through the West Coast a lot, and hopefully this new record will help us extend that to a national scale. And of course, stay ahead of the TV show on Google!
