In just its first year, RoboPop has made a lot of people in Fresno dance.
And it plans to make even more people move with the release of its debut CD, "Aerobics."
RoboPop is the brainchild of producer/singer Scott Warner, who went from making hip-hop beats to dance-floor-friendly electro-pop in the vein of Chromeo and Justice.
Warner writes and produces all the music. In the studio, it's all him. At live shows, he's joined by Chad Battenburg and Leo Rabago.
The band is celebrating the release of its CD Friday night at Audie's Olympic, 1426 E. Van Ness Ave.
The show starts at 9 p.m. Cheetahsaurus, Beastmaker, DJ Johnny Q are also on the bill. Cover is $6.
We talked to Warner to learn more.
Give us a quick version of the Robopop backstory. I started making beats for an L.A. electro/hip-hop group in 2006 and then decided to do a solo project called Robopop in July of 2008.
Describe the Robopop sound. Who would you compare it to? The sounds of the '80s, much like Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, but with my own touch. Michael Jackson; MSTRKRFT; Earth, Wind and Fire; Justice; Timbaland; and Jack White are among my biggest influences
I know you have a lot of experience in different genres of music, what made you pursue this type of project? I love having fun and dancing. I feel like this just fits who I am as a person pretty well.
What should people expect at a Robopop live show? Good times and a lot of dancing. There is always a good vibe and high energy.
Tell us more about the CD you're releasing? Do you have a favorite song? The CD is full length and is full of just catchy electro/funk/pop dance music. My personal favorite track is "Move Your Body."
What should fans be looking forward to from you guys in the future?Well, we are trying to put together a full band for RoboPop to get our live shows sounding even better and start getting out of Fresno to play shows. Also look for my new project coming soon called Phantom Nights.
