It was predicted, by this writer, in fact, that 2015 would be the year for hip-hop in Fresno.

So far, the prediction doesn’t seem far off.

Venues and promoters, at least, seem to be embracing the scene by bringing in national touring acts and showcasing the strength of local talent. This week is a good example, with two local showcases and a visit from a Living Legend.

Kooleidoscope

Ronnie Taylor – who performs under the name Kooleidoscope – plays at Strummer’s, headlining a showcase Saturday, Sept. 5, that includes R&B singer Brian Cade (who recently gave a show-stealing performance at the Summer Sweat Block Party). Also on the bill is Kam Cooks, Eddie G and Cockamamie Jamie collaborator DJ Timmy Blue.

Taylor keeps busy as an emcee, producer and drummer in the indie-rock band Santa Mira.

Pizza Halo

Fulton 55, meanwhile, hosts The Blackout Labor Day Bash Saturday, Sept. 5, with locals Halo The Human, Omar Aura and Prettyvicious.

Halo (real name, Donell Page) released the aptly named Pizza Halo mixtape in July. The rapper established himself as a voice in the local scene and also its most fanatic pizza lover. He is the reason behind Popolo’s Pizza Fries.

The Crow

Los Angeles underground rapper Eligh stops Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Strummer’s, with Minnesota rapper deM atlaS and local comedy rapper Cockamamie Jamie.

Eligh (also known as The Crow) is a genre bender, incorporating UK dub music with elements of indie rock and folk music and the complexity of jazz. The rapper/producer started as a member of the Bay Area hip-hop group Living Legends, which featured hip-hop notables like Murs and The Grouch (and Fresno’s own Aesop Fables). He is on tour in support of his latest album, “80hrtz.” The album is out now and available in a “pay what you want” option at Elighmusic.com.
