How To Be Single (R)

Directed by: Christian Ditter

Starring: Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Leslie Mann, Alison Brie

The pitch: A law firm employee is coming out of a failed relationship. Her best friend decides to help her navigate the choppy waters of dating. Alice is also dealing with her single sister, Meg, who’s having a relationship with a younger man while dealing with a pregnancy.

The formula: Call up a few moments of “Bridesmaids.” Make a date with moments of “Friends With Benefits.” Say good night to a touch of “Love.”

Go see it: If you are looking for a smart and funny story about dating.

Don’t go see it: If you expect every other joke to be about bodily functions.

Bouncing back: The career of Dakota Johnson seemed too black and blue to survive after “Fifty Shades of Grey.” But she shows real comic skills here.
