Critical mass: Movie review roundup for Oct. 23-29

Mia Wasikowska appears in a scene from “Crimson Peak.” Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures

Crimson Peak (R)

Directed by: Guillermo del Toro

Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam

The pitch: A young woman’s marriage to a British gentleman begins to go bad when she moves into his home, which is filled with ghosts.

The formula: Scare up a few bits of “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Get freaky with bits of “13 Ghosts.” Check out some moments of “Transylvania 6-5000.”

Go see it: If you never miss a del Toro picture.

Don’t go see it: If you get frustrated by paper-thin plots.

Is there an eye doctor in the house?: For some odd reason, Wasikowska spends a lot of time fiddling with her glasses.
