American Ultra (R)

Directed by: Nima Nourizadeh

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Connie Britton

The pitch: Stoner discovers that he was part of a government experiment. He calls on abilities he never realized he had to stop the people who are trying to kill him.

The formula: Secretly select moments from “The Man With One Red Shoe.” Sneak out a bit of “The Manchurian Candidate.” Capture elements of “Pineapple Express.”

Go see it: If you like like weird spy stories.

Don’t go see it: If you prefer your spies to wear trench coats and have code names like “Mr. Rabbit Lightning.”

Very different: Connie Britton generally gets cast in motherly roles but shows she can handle action parts with this film.
