When the original “Star Wars” opened in 1977, there was plenty of talk about box office totals but there wasn’t as much discussion of what a movie has made in other markets.

The film was almost as big a hit in foreign markets as it was in the United Sates. So far, ‘Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope” has taken in more than $460 million in domestic ticket sales. The foreign sales numbers stand at just north of $314 million.

“A New Hope” was a hit around the world. Pictured above is a page from the “Star Wars” program from Japan.

Foreign numbers are expected to be bigger than domestic numbers because of the growth in theaters around the world. China has shown major growth in this area and the film should be huge there.

We will know in a few weeks if those predictions are correct.
