Ian McDiarmid had a long acting career before being cast as Senator Palpatine in “Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.” But the British actor - who is having his 71st birthday today - gained major fame for his work in three of the “Star Wars” movies.

He reprised his role for “Star Wars: Episode 11: Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.”

His most recent work was in the TV series “Utopia.”
