This is a big day for “Star Wars” fans.

Although the film didn’t live up to its expectations when it opened 16 years ago, “Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace” was at least another new offering in the “Star Wars” universe. It went on to make more than $432 million at the box office in American and went over the $1 billion mark around the world.

It also got about as many complaints.

Six years later, “Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith” hit theaters. The third film in the series showed that fans weren’t very happy as it took in $50 million less in the United States and about $150 million less around the world.

On a happier note, today is Peter Mayhew’s birthday. The man inside the Chewbacca costume turns 71.
