Cirque du Soleil is returning to Fresno with the new arena show “Toruk: The First Flight,” which will play Oct. 27-30 at the Save Mart Center. Tickets go on sale to the public 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12. If you’re a Cirque Club member, they go on sale today (Monday, Aug. 8) at 10 a.m.
The show is inspired by James Cameron’s movie “Avatar.”
From the Cirque team:
“The First Flight” transports you to the world of Pandora in a visually stunning live setting. Experience a storytelling odyssey through a new world of imagination, discovery, and possibility.
Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination.
The Cirque franchise has had a successful relationship with Fresno, whose fans have streamed out to a number of touring productions, including last year’s “Varekai,” which to me was a cut above many of the past offerings.
From descriptions of the show in various reviews, it appears “Toruk” breaks new Cirque ground by using giant animal puppets and incorporating a smartphone app that audience members are encouraged to use during the performance.
Tickets to “Toruk” range from $28-$113.
