Jason Meyers of Clovis came up just short again of winning his first World of Outlaws national sprint car championship.

Racing in the season-finale show at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., Meyers won Friday's feature for his ninth victory of the season and pulled within 25 points of leader Donny Schatz.

But Schatz, who drives for car owner Tony Stewart of NASCAR fame, clinched his fourth-consecutive series championship with a sixth-place finish in Saturday night's feature.

The 30-year-old Meyers finished runner-up in the season standings for the third straight year -- an amazing feat considering he drives for Elite Racing, a small and underfunded team that must compete against outfits like Schatz's.

Meyers, who won his heat race Saturday, finished third in the last feature of the season, captured by another NASCAR star-owned team, Kasey Kahne Racing and driver Joey Saldana.

An off night in qualifying Thursday cost Meyers valuable points, allowing Schatz to cruise Saturday.

"I got very conservative tonight," said Schatz, who posted 12 victories this season.

Still, Meyers got closer to Schatz in the final standings. Last year, Schatz won by 132 points.
