Mathews a semifinalist for Doak Walker award

Fresno State's Ryan Mathews is one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker award, given to the nation's top running back.

The junior leads the nation with 1,459 rushing yards and an average of 162.1 per game.

Three finalists will be named Nov. 23 and a winner announced Dec. 10.

Mathews serves as the centerpiece of an offense that ranks fifth in the nation in rushing, 11th in scoring and 17th in total yards.

Stanford's Toby Gerhart, also a semifinalist, is second in rushing with 1,217 yards -- an average of 135.2 per game.

Other semifinalists are Donald Buckram of Texas-El Paso, Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech, Mark Ingram of Alabama, Dion Lewis of Pittsburgh, Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State, C.J. Spiller of Clemson, Ben Tate of Auburn and Ryan Williams of Virginia Tech.
