Reedley College beat Sierra by a foot for the second straight year in a Valley Conference football showdown and wakes up today alone atop the standings.
Curtis O'Neill, who kicked three field goals, connected on a school-record tying 53-yarder as time ran out, as the Tigers scored the final 11 points for a 25-22 victory Saturday in Rocklin.
Last year, Reedley shocked then-state No. 1 Sierra 28-27 on A. J. Forestiere's 45-yard field goal and wound up winning the conference.
The Tigers (6-3) are 3-1 in conference with one game left against Fresno City at home.
Reedley's defense intercepted four Jeff Nelson passes but the Tigers trailed 22-14 in the fourth quarter after a Sierra (4-5, 2-2) touchdown. That's when Tevin Mitchell blocked the extra-point kick attempt and Dontea Smith ran the ball back 95 yards for two points that sparked the comeback.
O'Neill kicked field goals of 37 and 52 yards and Reedley got the ball back one last time with 1:09 left. Starting at their own 46, the Tigers drove to Sierra's 36 and set up for the winning field goal.
Fresno 28, Delta 14
Isiah Barton's 37-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left capped Fresno City's run of 21 unanswered points and knocked the visiting Mustangs out of a first-place tie.
The Rams, trailing 14-7 at halftime, tied it on a short end run by Roddrick Hall and took the lead for good when quarterback Emmanuel Lewis slipped into the end zone from 1 yard out in the fourth quarter.
Fresno City (5-4, 2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak.
West Hills 10, Sequoias 7
Pete Borjas' 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter provided the winning margin as the Falcons (3-6, 1-3) shocked the Giants (5-4, 2-2) at Mineral King Bowl in Visalia.
Both teams scored in the first quarter: Sequoias' Brant Botill on a 4-yard run and West Hills' Shane Cams on a 2-yard burst.
