Sunbirds, down two sets, stay unbeaten in volleyball
Top-ranked Fresno Pacific's quest for an unbeaten volleyball regular season remains alive.
Martina Gregusova had 26 kills and the defending NAIA champion Sunbirds rallied from two sets down to outlast No. 2 California Baptist 3-2 Saturday in Riverside -- clinching their 10th consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference title.
Fresno Pacific won 21-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-10, the second time this season it came from behind to beat the Lancers 3-2.
"I think we grew up a lot tonight," Sunbirds coach Dennis Janzen said. "We're a young team learning how to be a great team."
Lauren Albertson and Ke Ke Wang both had 11 kills, Erika Adachi 34 assists and Mariah Mandelbaum 26 digs.
Fresno Pacific concludes the regular season against unranked The Master's on Thursday in Santa Clarita and next Saturday at home against No. 25 Westmont.
Hawaii sweeps Bulldogs
A week after pushing No. 3 Hawaii to four sets, Fresno State's volleyball team was swept in three by the Rainbow Wahine on Friday in Honolulu.
Hawaii won 25-19, 25-11, 25-13, dropping the Bulldogs to 12-12 overall and 5-7 in the Western Athletic Conference. Kelli Parker had seven kills to lead the Bulldogs, who finished with a .042 hitting percentage and have lost four of the past five matches.
Fresno State finishes fall equestrian season
Fifth-ranked South Carolina handed No. 10 Fresno State a 14-5 setback in the team's final fall equestrian competition in Columbia, S.C.
Jill Tebbe won MVP honors for the Bulldogs in reining with a high score of 72.5. Other victories came from Lanie Madrazo, Nicole Roworth and Jessica Kissell on the flat and by Shawna McClurg in reining.
Top-ranked Fresno City opens season with split
Fresno City College, ranked No. 1 in the state men's basketball preseason poll, lost to No. 4 San Bernardino Valley 90-79 in the semifinals of the City College of San Francisco tournament and will play Santa Rosa today for third place.
The Rams beat Siskiyous 95-79 in the first round. Porterville lost 85-79 to No. 3 Mt. San Jacinto on opening day and 94-84 to Los Angeles Pierce in the consolation bracket.
Two Sequoias runners are runners-up in NorCal meet
College of the Sequoias had the runners-up in both races Saturday at the Northern California Community College Cross Country Championships in Belmont.
David Sanchez was second in the men's race, and Allison Gonzales was second in the women's race.
The Sequoias men finished third. Fresno City College, led by fifth-place finisher Eder Torreblanca, was fifth in the team standings. The Rams women, paced by 15th-place Beth Tademy, were sixth.
