West-side shootout: The Washington-Dos Palos North Sequoia League game at Dos Palos will match players coming off two of the Central Section's most overpowering performances of the season by a quarterback and running back.
Washington senior Adam McCurley passed for 250 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 50 yards and three more scores in a 45-26 win at Chowchilla. He's completed 61% of his passes while throwing for 2,163 yards and 23 touchdowns, with only four interceptions, for the season. Dos Palos junior Kevin Schofield carried 51 times for 302 yards and a score in a 27-14 win over Yosemite. He's averaging 6.3 yards per carry while rushing for 1,370 yards and 12 touchdowns. Washington (6-2) is 4-0 in the league and Dos Palos (4-4) is 3-1 with one regular-season game remaining after tonight.
State rankings: Buchanan is No. 18 and Bullard No. 25 in Cal-Hi Sports' state rankings. By divisions for state bowl purposes, in the south where the section is associated, Buchanan is No. 7 and Bullard No. 12 in D-I, Tulare No. 8 and Kingsburg No. 13 in D-II and Taft No. 8 in D-III.
Kendricks to UCLA: Eric Kendricks has a headache and a college destination, which is discouraging for Hoover and uplifting for UCLA. The running back/linebacker has made an oral commitment to the Bruins, who have received the same from two-way lineman Wesley Flowers and safety Tevin McDonald of Edison. But Kendricks is doubtful for No. 14 Hoover's County/Metro Athletic Conference game with No. 18 Reedley because of a concussion suffered last Friday against Edison.
East flying all directions: Buchanan is deep at wide receiver, but a go-to target has emerged in Jacob East, a 6-1, 175-pound senior, with 44 receptions for 1,106 yards (25.1 average) and 11 touchdowns. Bears coach Mike Vogt says: "His speed has improved tremendously through hard work in the weight room and natural maturation. He's very effective running the deeper routes. I think Jacob has developed to the point of being a scholarship wide receiver."
PLAYER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
-- Kerr Taubler, Bullard: At a time his No. 2 Knights (8-0) are unbeaten, yet minus a difference-maker receiver in Jajuan Hammond, it's imperative against No. 10 Edison (5-3) that he draw from the athletic and intellectual skills that could land him in the Ivy League, manage the game well and distribute the ball into the proper hands in the teams' latest CMAC showdown. Taubler didn't play in last week's 52-42 win over Reedley because of a staph infection just below his throwing elbow.
OTHER GAMES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
-- El Diamante (7-1) at Hanford (5-3): Miners, at 4-0, lead the Bullpups and Redwood by a game in the West Yosemite League. And it's in this league that El Diamante has won 20 straight games while averaging 43.3 points and winning by an average margin of 29.6 points. The Miners last lost in the WYL on Oct. 6, 2006, to Lemoore (21-13).
-- Frontier (8-0) at Stockdale (7-1): D-II and D-I contenders collide for Southwest Yosemite League title in Kern County.
-- Exeter (5-3) at Kingsburg (8-0): With running back Cameron Loeffler now at Nevada, Exeter will be in trouble if a shootout unfolds with gunslinging quarterback Tyler Bray and the Vikings in a match of Central Sequoia League unbeatens.
