Early start for big day of horse racing

The Big Fresno Fair offers an amazing 12-race card today, so come out and have some fun. Post time for today's first race has been moved up 15 minutes, to 12:30 p.m.

The Fresno Fair Horseracing Show - featuring Chris Terrence, Steve Cloud and me - airs at 9:30 p.m. on KJEO (digital channel 43.1, Comcast channel 10 or Dish channel 43) following each day of racing. The show features interviews with jockeys, trainers and owners, as well as the results and some picks for the next day.

HORSE RACING 101: TERMINOLOGY

Maiden race: A race only for horses who have never won a race

Claiming race: Races divided into price categories for which a horse may be claimed (purchased) out of that race

Allowance race: Eligibility of the horse is determined by meeting the conditions of past wins and/or earnings

Furlong: 220 yards or one-eighth of a mile; 4 furlongs are a half-mile, 6 furlongs three-quarters of a mile, and 8 furlongs 1 mile

Wire to wire: Used for a horse that wins the race by leading from start to finish
