Local briefs: 'Dogs volleyball rallies past Boise State

Storming back from a two-set deficit, Fresno State earned its first Western Athletic Conference volleyball victory of the season by outlasting host Boise State 3-2 on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs (8-6, 1-1) fell 26-16 and 25-19 in the first two sets before rallying 25-17, 25-21 and 15-11.

Two kills by Lauren Berger and one apiece by Marissa Brand and Allanah Munson helped Fresno State pull away in the final set. Boise State (1-12, 1-2) helped with five unforced errors.

Fresno State's Oct. 22 match against New Mexico State and its Oct. 29 contest against No. 4 Hawaii will be televised on ESPNU.

UFL includes ex-Dogs

Three former Fresno State football players have survived final roster cuts for the United Football League's inaugural season.

They are defensive tackle Jason Stewart (California Redwoods), running back Michael Pittman (Florida Tuskers) and linebacker Marcus Riley (Las Vegas Locomotives). The UFL begins play Thursday.

Riverbend hosts 2-man

Riverbend Golf Club will host the 10th annual Riverbend two-man championship Oct. 24-25.

War Angels set tryouts

The Central Cal War Angels women's football team will have tryouts Oct. 18 at Melody Park. The semi-pro team is part of the 48-team Women's Football Alliance.
