Local briefs: Rams capture CVC mini-tournament

Fresno City College outpointed four other Central Valley Conference teams to win a CVC mini-tournament Thursday at Kings River Golf & Country Club in Kingsburg.

Lauren Marlow shot a 13-over 85 to lead the Rams.

Kelsey Alcala of West Hills-Lemoore earned medalist honors with an 11-over 83.

Ex-Bullard, FCC player wins title in minors

Right-hander Cardoza Tucker (Bullard High/Fresno City College) and the Lake Erie Crushers beat River City 13-10 in the finale of the best-of-five championship series of the independent Frontier League.

Cardoza pitched the first four innings Wednesday in O'Fallon, Mo., but didn't figure in the decision.

During the regular season, Cardoza went 4-0 with a 2.53 ERA in 511/3 innings. He started five times in two playoff series and earned a win with two-thirds of an inning of relief against Kalamazoo in the deciding Game 5 of the Western Division series.

Lake Erie was in its inaugural season in the league, which has 12 teams throughout the Midwest.

Giants' Double-A team on move to Virginia

San Francisco's Double-A affiliate in Connecticut will relocate next season to Richmond, Va., in the Eastern League.

The Defenders are replacing the Richmond Braves, who ended a 43-year run by moving to Gwinnett County, Ga., after the 2008 season.

The Defenders will play games at the Diamond, a 25-year-old stadium, for at least two seasons. The franchise said it plans to spend about $1.5 million on improvements.
