Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
When: Oct. 24
Where: Fresno State, Maple Avenue Mall

Organizers expect a field of 8,000 for Fresno's largest running event. Options include a 5-kilometer men's race (7:30 a.m.), a 5K women's race (8 a.m.), noncompetitive 5K and 1-mile walks (11 a.m.) and a kids' race (noon.).

Both 5K races also serve as the final events in the Valley Runner of the Year Series, worth 10 points apiece.

Register today and Friday at Break the Barriers (8555 N. Cedar Ave., Fresno) or on raceday beginning at 6:30 a.m. Fees are $25 in advance for adults, $30 on raceday. Details: www.komencentralvalley.org.

"ONEYEAR" Film Premiere

When: Oct. 24, 7 p.m.

Where: New Covenant Church (1744 E. Nees Ave.)

Olympic snowboarder Andy Finch will make a special hometown appearance for the free Fresno premier of his newest snowboard movie.

Produced by The Nations Foundation, "ONEYEAR" depicts the off-the-slopes lives of several pro snowboarders who are also devout Christians. It was filmed in Argentina, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Colorado, Mammoth Mountain and Lake Tahoe.

Finch will be giving away a custom snowboard among many raffle prizes. The film likely will be shown outdoors so bring your own seating.

News & notes

- Black bears in Yosemite are more likely to break into minivans than any other type of vehicle, according to a recent study in the Journal of Mammalogy. Data from 908 vehicle break-ins was used in the study. Twenty five percent of those break-ins were to minivans, more than SUVs (22.5%), small cars (17.1%) and sedans (13.7%).

- The Sequoia National Forest has released its Motorized Travel Management Final Environmental Impact Statement. Five of the six alternatives would restrict motorized travel outside the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The public comment period ends Nov. 9. Details: www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia.

- Jesse Roseman of the Tuolumne River Trust will present slides of last year's Paddle to the Sea at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 during the monthly Sierra Club Meeting at the UC Center (550. E. Shaw Ave.). All are welcome.

- The annual Festival of Fly Fishing returns to Lodi on Oct. 23-24. Instruction and seminars are geared to fly fishers of all ages and experience levels. Details: www.nccfff.org/.
