Grizzly Century

Where: North Fork
Ride one of California's most scenic cycling courses as it passes Mile High Vista, Arch Rock and the red fir forests of Cold Springs Summit before a speedy descent to Bass Lake and back to North Fork.
Besides the 100-mile namesake ride, the event includes a 63-mile metric century and the 24-mile Loop the Lake around Bass Lake. All rides begin at 7 a.m. at North Fork School (33087 Road 228, North Fork).
Registration is $55. Proceeds from the event benefit the Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway.

Harvest Run

Where: Cutler Park, Visalia
It's not too late to leave your mark on the Valley Runner of the Year Series. The 5-kilometer event, worth 10 points, is the penultimate race.
The 5K race begins at 8:30 a.m., preceded by a 1-mile event at 8:15. Race day registration is $25 for the 5K and $5 for the mile. Details: visaliarunners.com.

- Brett Maune of Los Angeles is claiming a record for an unsupported solo hike of the 223-mile John Muir Trail from Whitney Portal to Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley: 3 days, 14 hours, 13 minutes. If it's verified that Maune did not receive any support, he will have smashed the record by some 19 hours.
- An $800,000 makeover of the Half Dome Overlook at Yosemite National Park has been completed and reopened to the public. Located along Big Oak Flat Road, the overlook provides a view of Half Dome framed on either side by El Capitan and Glacier Point.
