Paperwork submitted for record-sized bass
Fishing's Holy Grail may finally have an equal.

Documentation for the 22-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass caught July 2 by Japanese angler Manabu Kurita arrived Monday at the International Game Fish Association headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla., for official recognition.

If Kurita's application passes muster, it would tie the 77-year-old world record for largemouth bass set by Georgia's George Perry in 1932. Photos and video were submitted along with the written documentation.

Kurita reportedly caught his fish using a live bluegill as bait while trolling through a canal on Lake Biwa, an ancient reservoir northeast of Kyoto. The fish measured 27.2 inches in length with an almost equal girth of 26.77 inches.

According to IGFA conservation director Jason Schratwieser, the review could take up to a month.

"We still have a number of questions to ask [Japanese officials] and Kurita regarding local laws and the area he caught it in while he was trolling through a canal on the lake," Schratwieser said.

The IGFA (www.igfa.org) has kept saltwater fishing records since 1939 and freshwater records since 1978.
