DFG reduces counter hours at Fresno office
California's ongoing financial crisis is putting a crimp on the Department of Fish and Game.

Beginning Monday, the DFG's Fresno license sales office at 1234 East Shaw Ave. will close promptly at 5 p.m., and all transactions must be started by 4:30 p.m.

In addition, all DFG offices will be closed Friday and July 24 to comply with the furlough directive for all state employees.

Brighten your understanding of the night sky in a place that's dark enough to see stars.

Join the Sequoia Riverlands Trust for an evening of fun and informative stargazing. Several large telescopes will be on hand, and astronomer Greg Eckes of the Tulare Astronomical Association will answer questions about planets, constellations and the universe.

Sierra National Forest spokeswoman Sue Exline said her office received nearly 5,000 public comments regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Motorized Travel Management. A Final Environmental Impact Statement and supervisor Ed Cole's Record of Decision could be issued by September.

Boulder, Colo., was named America's best outdoors city for kids in a recent survey by Backpacker magazine. Jackson, Wyo.; Durango, Colo.; Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Juneau, Alaska, rounded out the top 5. Eureka/Arcata/Fortuna ranked No. 16 as the only California "city" in the poll.

The Sierra Club is holding a group hike to Mount Givens, Mount Ian Campbell and Kings Castle on Saturday. The hike is 12 miles and mostly cross country. Details: Gerald Vinnard, (559) 431-5780 or gvinnard@cvip.net.

The Army Corps of Engineers is waving all day-use fees from Aug. 1-9 at each of its 10 Central Valley parks. These include Pine Flat Lake, Lake Kaweah, Lake Success, Eastman Lake and Hensley Lake. Camping fees still apply.

The annual Fresno Friends of the NRA dinner and auction is Aug. 5 at Pardini's on West Shaw Avenue in Fresno. Tickets are $40 and should be ordered no later than Aug. 1. Details: Barry Bauer, (559) 288-2115.

The National Parks Travelers Club is holding its annual convention at Sequoia National Park from Aug. 14-16. Several events are planned. Details: www.parkstamps.org.
