Weekend water outlook positive
Surveys have shown more people go boating around July 4th than any weekend of the year. Despite widespread reports of a drought, central San Joaquin Valley boat owners should find plenty of water in area reservoirs.

Excellent: Millerton (100% of capacity), Shaver (96%), Huntington (99%), Courtright (98%), Florence (92%), Mammoth (91%).

Good: Bass (76%), Pine Flat (61%), Kaweah (61%).

Fair: Success (48%), Edison (46%), Wishon (39%), Hensley (32%).

Poor: Eastman (19%), San Luis (17%).

Buck Rock Lookout Open House

When: Saturday

Where: Giant Sequoia National Monument

Experience grand views of the High Sierra and barbecued hot dog at the same time during this annual event near Big Meadows, off the General's Highway. Booths featuring local history and wildlife, children's activities and lookout memorabilia will be on display.

News & notes

A bill that would stiffen penalties and fines for poaching in California cleared the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water last week by an 11-0 vote. If AB 708 becomes law, convicted poachers could face fines up to $40,000 or one year in prison. The penalties increase for subsequent violations.

Explore the Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park from July 10-12 with former ranger Randy Coffman through the Sierra Natural History Association. Participants will learn how to use a map and compass. Details: sequoiahistory.org or (559) 565-3759.

The High Sierra Regatta returns to Huntington Lake on July 11-12 (centerboard classes) and July 18-19 (keel classes). Details: fresnoyachtclub.com.

Beginning fly fishermen have one final chance to learn how to cast Wednesday at Woodward Park from 6 p.m. until dark. The lessons, offered by Fly Fishers for Conservation, are free. Loaner rods are available.
