Buck Rock Lookout Open House

Experience grand views of the High Sierra and the taste of a barbecued hot dog at the same time during this annual event near the Big Meadows area. Booths featuring local history and wildlife, children's activities and lookout memorabilia will be on display.

Nine Reedley College forestry students will spend the next 60 days performing trail maintenance projects in the Florence Lake area, an entry point to the John Muir Wilderness and the northern tip of Kings Canyon National Park. The trail crew is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and organized by the Student Conservation Association.
A bill that would toughen penalties for poachers is making its way through Sacramento. Written by Assembly Member Jared Huffman, AB 708 would close a loophole that allows many poaching convictions to be treated as misdemeanors. The bill was heard Tuesday by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water.
Lewiston, Idaho, ranked as the best town in the U.S. for hunters and anglers in a recent survey by Outdoor Life Magazine. Marquette, Mich.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Rawlins, Wyo.; and Pocatello, Idaho, round out the top five. Of course, this is the same magazine that named Susanville as California's best outdoors town last year in a similar survey. ... Susanville?
San Diego angler Adam Hinkle caught an 87-pound blue catfish on 4-pound test line at Lower Otay Lake. It would've been a line-class world record, but Hinkle won't apply for the record because he hooked the fish by accident.

Beginning fly fishermen can learn to cast like a pro Wednesday at Woodward Park from 6 p.m. until dark. The free lessons, offered by Fly Fishers for Conservation, continue weekly through July 8. Loaner rods are available.
