Buffalo Soldiers of Yosemite
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday
Where: Fresno REI

At the turn of the 20th century, more than 400 black soldiers patrolled Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. These men protected the parks from illegal grazing, poaching and timber thieves, and even built the first trail to the summit of Mount Whitney.

Cross the River Run

When: Sunday

Where: Woodward Park

After a month-long break, the Valley Runner of the Year Series returns with a vengeance with races on consecutive weekends (the Miracle Mile of Quarters Run/Walk is June 13).

The 10-kilometer run (6:45 a.m.) is worth 20 series points. Other events include a 2-mile run/walk (6:30 a.m.) and two kids' races beginning at 6:55 a.m. Adult registration is $25 on race day beginning at 5:30 a.m.

News & notes

Extreme kayaker Tyler Bradt recently paddled over 186-foot tall Palouse Falls in eastern Washington, breaking the waterfall world record by more than 60 feet. Yes, Bradt survived. Video of the plunge can be seen at www.kayakwaterfalls.com.

Fresh off their Tour of California success, Clovis officials are talking about bringing a criterium to Old Town in September. It will be more of a local race similar to the Central Valley Classic, which folded in 2008.

The annual Youth Fishing Derby returns to Shaver Lake on June 13. There are numerous prizes and activities from 8 a.m. to noon at the SCE Day Use area off Road No. 2 along the north side of the lake. Details: Greg Marks, (559) 855-8752.

Outdoor Life magazine recently ranked Lewiston, Idaho, as the "Best Place to Live" in a recent survey of small towns for fishermen and hunters. Marquette, Mich.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Rawlins, Wyo.; and Pocatello, Idaho, round out the top five.

Public drop-in sessions on the Sierra National Forest Travel Management Plan continue Tuesday in North Fork, Wednesday in Prather and June 11 and 13 in Clovis. Weekday sessions run from 4 to 8 p.m., weekend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Details: (559) 297-0706.
