U.S Masters Swimming Short Course National Championships
When: Thursday-Sunday
Where: Clovis North High

More than 1,500 swimmers ranging in age from 18 to 91 and representing 211 clubs are competing at the newly opened Clovis North Aquatics Complex, which features two 50-meter outdoor pools and seating for more than 2,500. Participants must be registered Masters swimmers.

On Monday, the U.S. Masters Swimming One Mile National Championship open-water swim will be held at Millerton Lake. Details: www.usms.org/comp/scnats09/.

Mother's Day Run

When: Saturday

Where: Madera County sheriff's complex (14143 Road 28, Madera)

Back for its sixth year, this 5-mile run (7:40 a.m.) is worth 30 points in the Valley Runner of the Year Series. Other events include a 2-mile run/walk (7:35) and a 1/4-mile kids' race (7:25).

Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for kids on race day beginning at 6 a.m.

International Migratory Bird Day

When: Saturday

Where: Hume Lake, Powder Can Picnic Area

Novice and experienced birders alike are invited to join Forest Service wildlife biologist Jeff Cordes from 7:30- 9 a.m. for a morning of hiking and bird counting.

The event is free and open to the public.

Powder Can Picnic Area is near the Hume Lake Christian Camp and can be accessed via Highway 180.

News & notes

Glacier Point Road, which leads to the spectacular viewpoint over Half Dome and Yosemite Valley, opened last week after its normal winter closure. The road to Mariposa Grove also is open, but there is no shuttle service. Tioga Pass Road remains closed with about 20 inches of snow remaining at Tuolumne Meadows.

Kaiser Pass Road is not expected to open until Memorial Day weekend. The road to Courtright Reservoir will be closed until more snow melts from the boat ramp.

The Shaver Lake Volunteers have published a new map on water-resistent paper that depicts all the multi-use trails in the vicinity of Shaver Lake. The map is available at several Shaver Lake outlets.

Explore the wildflowers and shrubs of Black Mountain at their peak bloom Saturday with the Sierra Foothill Conservancy. Fees are $10 per person. Details: (559) 855-3473.

Join Yosemite Association naturalist Suzanne Swedo on Saturday for a hiking tour of Yosemite waterfalls at their peak flow. Fees are $82 for nonmembers.
