Blossom Trail Run

As spring approaches, there's no better way to gauge your fitness level than lacing up the running shoes at a stellar local race.
The 10-kilometer main event (8:15 a.m.) is worth 30 points in the Valley Runner of the Year Series. There is also a 2-mile run/walk, noncompetitive 10K walk and a slew of kids' races from the start/finish line between West and O streets near city hall.

Telefest 2009

Where: Sierra Summit
Free-heeled skiers of Central California, unite.
This annual celebration of telemark skiing features discounted lift tickets and clinics, demos, races, guided tours, avalanche beacon training, live music and a film screening.

News & notes
- Thirteen Department of Fish and Game wardens in the Central Enforcement District were issued pink slips last week, subjecting them to state-mandated layoffs, assistant chief John Baker said. The 14-county district, headquartered in Fresno, is currently being patrolled by 36 wardens and supervisors.
- Philip Bradley of Merced was fined $5,000, ordered to forfeit his rifle and hunting equipment, sentenced to three days in jail (already served), and banned from Yosemite National Park for three years after pleading guilty to illegal hunting and firearms possession within park boundaries. Rangers caught the 62-year-old Bradley in a stakeout last fall.
- The San Joaquin River Parkway is offering guided hikes Saturday to Pincushion Peak (steep 3 miles) and the San Joaquin River Trail (16 miles). Fees are $10. Register at (559) 248-8480, ext. 107.
- Learn the ins and outs of cross country skiing Saturday during an introductory seminar offered by the Sequoia Field Institute. Fees are $46 for non-members. Details: www.sequoiahistory.org/sfi.
- Yosemite Fitness is offering an extensive training program for hikers that want to reach the top of Half Dome. Classes begin Monday and will be held three times a week for four months. Details: (559) 229-7625.
- Buy, sell and trade your favorite outdoors gear at the Sportsmen's Swap Meet on March 14 at the Fresno County Sportsmen's Club (10645 N. Lanes Road, Fresno). Gates open at 8 a.m. and admission is $3.
- All DFG offices will be closed Friday because of state-mandated furloughs.
