Location: Fifteen miles north of central Fresno; south entrance off Millerton Road, north entrance off Road 145 (north)

Storage: Friant Dam, built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1944, captures 520,500 acre feet of water (when full) from the San Joaquin River

Setting: Rolling, grassy foothills dotted with blue and live oaks; oaks and gray pines in the river canyon; wildflowers abundant in spring; elevation 578 feet

Activities: Boating, fishing, camping, water sports, picnicking, hiking and mountain biking

Facilities: One commercial marina offering slip and boat rentals, gasoline, snacks, bait and boating supplies; two public boat ramps; one drive-in campground (north shore) with 148 sites, 27 with electricity hookups; one boat-in campground (Temperance Flat) with 25 first-come, first-served sites; numerous picnic areas, one (South Finegold) reachable by boat or car

Fishing: Open all year for spotted bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, American shad, channel catfish,crappie and bluegill

Trails: Blue Oak Trail (2.5 miles) runs on south side of lake between Blue Oak Picnic Area and Winchell Cove; Buzzards Roost Trail (1 mile); south terminus of San Joaquin River Trail (16 miles) at South Finegold Picnic Area

Fun fact: Lake boasts state’s largest wintering population of bald eagles; boat tours are available
