Location: Approximately 45 miles northeast of Fresno along Highway 168

Storage: Shaver Lake Dam, built by Southern California Edison in 1927, captures 135,283 acre feet of water (when full) from Stevenson Creek

Setting: Ringed by thick pine and fir forests; elevation 5,370 feet

Activities: Boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, water sports, hiking, mountain biking

Facilities: Two commercial marinas offering slip and boat rentals, gasoline, snacks, bait and boating supplies; three public boat ramps; three campgrounds, including some with RV hookups and showers and at Camp Edison; four picnic and day use areas

Fishing: Open all year for brown trout, rainbow trout, kokanee, smallmouth bass, bluegill and catfish; nearby creeks and streams have seasonal closures

Trails: Fourteen-mile Perimeter Trail encircles lake (look for painted white circles in trees with black “P”); numerous others, refer to Shaver Lake Trail Map (revised 2009) available at several local outlets

Fun fact: Several old buildings in town are converted sawmills left over from Shaver Lake’s logging heyday
