CAMPING
Tuolumne Meadows: Reservations are available online (www.recreation.gov) for half of the 304 campsites; the other half are first-come, first-served. On weekends, the campground typically fills before noon. Fees are $20/night for a maximum of six people and $40/night for group sites. Trailers up to 35 feet are permitted. Yosemite Creek, Porcupine Flat, White Wolf: Located along Tioga Pass Road between 20 and 30 minutes west of Tuolumne Meadows. All are first-come, first-served; no reservations are accepted. Fees are $10/night for Yosemite Creek and Porcupine Flat, $14/night for White Wolf. RVs and trailers not recommended at Yosemite Creek.
Outside the park: The Inyo National Forest has several campgrounds (Tioga Lake, Saddlebag Lake, Ellery Lake, Junction, Sawmill) located across Tioga Pass. All are first-come, first-served and range from $12-$17/night. Web site: www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/ recreation/.
LODGING
Tuolumne Meadows Lodge and White Wolf: These facilities feature tent cabins with beds, linens and a wood-burning stove. Both tend to fill up months in advance, but last-minute cancellations are not uncommon. Go to www.yosemitepark.com or call (801) 559-4949 for details, rates and availability.
High Sierra Camps: Spaced between 6 and 10 miles apart on a loop trail in the Yosemite high country, these historical facilities make it possible to go backpacking without carrying a pack. Rates are $153/night, including meals. Check availability at www.yosemitepark.com or call (801) 559-4949.
EATING
Tuolumne Meadows Lodge: Family style dining room open daily for breakfast (7-9 a.m.) and dinner (5:50-8 p.m.). Reservations required, call (209) 372-8413.
Tuolumne Meadows Grill & Store: Open daily from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. serving eggs, pancakes and burgers. The market next door is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
WHAT TO DO
Horseback riding: Two-hour, half-day and full-day rides are available from the Tuolumne Meadows Stable. Details: (209) 372-8427.
Rock climbing: The Yosemite Mountaineering School offers daily classes beginning at 8:30 a.m., including programs designed especially for women. Details: (209) 372-8344.
Ranger programs: Guided hikes, botanical walks and campfires held daily through Labor Day. Check park newspaper for details.
