Soquel Campground & vicinity, Iron Lakes and Star Lakes Routes
In October 2008, from the 12th to 14th, we took a trip to the Fresno Dome area with intentions of camping a couple nights and taking some trails I had not explored.
We headed up Hwy. 41 past Oakhurst and turned on Sky Ranch Rd. and found a nice campsite at Soquel Campground. Here are some scenes from the first afternoon at
Soquel and nearby trails .
The second day we headed for the Iron Lakes and Star Lakes OHV Routes. Here are scenes from Forest Roads 5S92, 5S92A and 23E04 -
the Iron Lakes Route .

Just chill out
All these fat, depressed cats running around these days are really
starting to harsh my mellow. Diabetes, tea parties, heart attacks and
demagogues - what next?
Why can't we build a hiking and/or bike trail from San Diego to Oregon?
I see a four-foot wide paved path with a park/campground every 25 miles
built by unemployed people. We could route it through Firebaugh and show
off California agriculture and bring in tourist bucks.
Do you think we could manage that? Probably not, too depressed.

There's lots to sweat when tackling Kaiser Peak
Rising 10,320 feet above sea level, Kaiser Peak is the centerpiece of the relatively untrodden Kaiser Wilderness with a commanding view of the central Sierra Nevada from its summit.
Sounds great, right? It is, but you'll have to sweat to get there.
Most visitors to the Kaiser Wilderness enter via Potter Pass, Sample Meadow or the Upper Billy Creek trailhead on the west end of Huntington Lake. Few hike directly up Kaiser Peak, and for good reason: It's brutal, requiring 3,200 feet of climbing over 51/2 miles, much of the route exposed to the sun.

Recap: New England vs. Miami
Tom Brady threw for 332 yards and hit Randy Moss with the go-ahead 71-yard score in the third quarter, as the New England Patriots opened some breathing room in the AFC East with a 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.
Brady completed 25-of-37 passes with the one touchdown and an interception, while Moss hauled in six balls for 147 yards. Wes Welker contributed nine catches for 84 yards in the victory.
Laurence Maroney chipped in 82 yards with a touchdown on the ground for New England (6-2), which had a bye last week after a victory over Tampa Bay in London and has won three straight to grab a two-game lead over the idle New York Jets in the AFC East.

Off-road enthusiasts express frustration with plan
OAKHURST - Matt Cassle enjoys riding his motorcycle over something other than pavement.
But with the Sierra National Forest poised to close a majority of trails and routes that motorcycle riders, Jeep drivers and backcountry campers have utilized for decades, Cassle and others like him feel they're the ones being run over.
Sixty off-road enthusiasts turned out for a public forum Tuesday night at the Oakhurst Community Center mainly to express frustration and displeasure with Forest Service officials over the Motorized Travel Management Draft Environmental Impact Statement. The 998-page document (including appendixes) was released last week, triggering a 45-day public comment period that ends June 15.
