REI free weekend – REI is offering 500 free classes around the country through its Outdoor School this weekend.
Locally, the Fresno store will host celebrations and classes both days at Nelder Grove Campground just north of Oakhurst.
Two Cities price increase – This weekend is the last opportunity to sign up for the upcoming Two Cities Marathon & Half before prices increase. Registration costs $85 for the relay and half-marathon options, and $95 for the full 26.2 miles. After Sunday, all prices will increase $10.
The Two Cities marathon is set for Nov. 6.
Shaver Lake hike and boat ride – The Shaver Lake Trail Volunteers will lead a hike on the Lakeview Trail to the Eagle Point picnic area on Aug. 6. The event is free and open to the public. Those interested should meet at the forestry office at Camp Edison at 9 a.m.
The hike is a moderate 2 miles on trails, paved and non-paved roads. Bring a snack lunch, plenty of water, and wear sturdy shoes or boots.
Southern California Edison will provide a boat shuttle back to the parking area following lunch.
SAR Wild and Rescue Run – Run through the mountains and take in Sierra scenery near Shaver Lake as part of Fresno County Search and Rescue’s annual Wild and Rescue Run fundraiser.
The Aug. 14 event includes a trail half-marathon, 10K trail run, 5K wild run and a 2-mile family hike. The event is also part of the Trail Runner Trophy Series.
Registration costs $15 for children up to age 12 and $35 for adults on the family hike; $40 per person for the 5K and 10K options; and $75 for the half-marathon.
The races will start a quarter-mile north of the intersection of Dinkey Creek Road and Fishing Club Road on the south side of the lake.
Participants will receive a technical event shirt, medallion, chip timing and a barbecue lunch.
CDFW meeting in Los Banos – The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a meeting Aug. 20 in Los Banos to discuss possible impacts to hunter access on public lands in the northern San Joaquin Valley Type A and B Wildlife Areas, including Mendota, Los Banos and the surrounding units.
In addition, the meeting will touch on the Merced National Wildlife Refuge, including the Lone Tree Unit and the San Luis wildlife refuge.
The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. at the Grasslands Environmental Education Center (18110 W. Henry Miller Road, Los Banos). RSVP to Sean Allen (email@example.com).
Pincushion Hill climb – Take San Joaquin Running’s 1-mile timed challenge to the top of Pincushion Hill on Sept. 10. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, age group winners as well as Clydesdale/Athena division winners. All participants will receive a custom koozie, and shirts are available with an extra fee.
Registration starts at $25 for the climb, and $30 for the Mountain Goat race. In the Mountain Goat race, participants will have their first run up the mountain timed and then have until noon to complete as many repeat trips to the top. Participants must complete at least two trips to the top in order to be considered a Mountain Goat. Finishers will receive a special medal, as well as prizes to the top male and female runners.
Prices increase $5 for both races after Sunday.
