Walk with Fresno Audubon
The Fresno Audubon Society is taking its first Wednesday Walk of 2015 (Jan. 7) to the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is 10.2 acres of grasslands and wetlands that has become a prime area to view wintering waterfowl.

Got Miles? 5K Birthday race

The Bad News Bears Runners group is hosting its fourth annual Got Miles? 5K Birthday Run/Walk for charity on Saturday, Jan. 17.
The race will start at 9 a.m. at Railroad Park on the northeast corner of Alluvial and Peach Avenues in Clovis.
Cost of registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children. All proceeds go to the Poverello House.
Participants will receive a race bib & t-shirt, birthday racing balloon and a custom-made finisher’s medallion.
Smith Basin Hike at McKenzie Preserve
When: 9 a.m. Saturday
Where: McKenzie Preserve, north of Fresno
The Sierra Foothill Conservancy is hosting an 8-mile round-trip hike to Smith Basin. It is recommended for advanced hikers only as it has a 1,000-foot elevation gain to the tabletop and then descends 800 feet into the basin.
Space is limited. The hike takes about seven hours to complete, allowing for lunch in the basin. The group will meet at 9 a.m. in the parking area. Participants should bring water, snacks or a lunch.
REI Garage Sale
When: 2-6 p.m. Sunday
Where: REI Fresno, 7810 N. Blackstone Ave.
REI will hold a members-only garage sale for adventurers seeking cheap and discounted gear. The store will hand out numbered wristbands at 2 p.m., with the lottery draw entry starting at 3 p.m. Memberships can be purchased on site for $20. All sales are final.
