Trail Mix for 7/31: Pincushion Hill's race to the top; Sycamore Island cleanup

Outdoors news and notes.

Nathaniel Moore, the mastermind behind the San Joaquin River Trail Half Marathon, has cooked up more races along the SJRT — from a one-mile uphill challenge to a 50-mile ultramarathon.

The Pincushion Hill Climb is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sept. 13 and will start at the South Finegold Picnic Area's SJRT trailhead. The run ends at the top of Pincushion Mountain, a 500-foot elevation gain, overlooking Millerton Lake.

Registration costs $20 through today. Starting Friday, registration will increase by $5.

Because it is a single-track trail, runners will start three at a time, staggered a half-minute apart. Results will be based on chip timing. The race is open to all athletes 12 and up.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the fastest three finishers by sex, age group, team, and division (Clydesdale and Athena). All participants will receive a custom koozie. Race-day shirts also are also available for purchase during registration.

The SJRT 50-50, a 50K (31 miles) and 50-mile ultramarathon is scheduled for Nov. 15.

The cost to register is $95 for the 50K and $120 for the 50-miler.
