Cincinnati teacher wins Badwater; 2011 champ Oswaldo Lopez of Madera drops out

Harvey Lewis of Cincinnati won the AdventureCORPS Badwater 135 Ultramarathon on Tuesday morning.

Lewis, a 38-year-old teacher, reached the finish at the Mount Whitney Portal in 23 hours, 52 minutes, 55 seconds. Grant Maughan, 50, of Dudley, Australia, was second in 24:43:08.

Oswaldo Lopez of Madera, the 2011 Badwater champ, had to drop out of the race overnight after the 75-mile checkpoint. The 42-year-old -- who had never finished worse than third in his previous five Badwater races -- was on the course for 16 hours, 26 minutes and for 87th place in the 97-runner field.

Scott Newton of Shell Beach, the owner of Sole 2 Soul Sports running stores in Fresno, Visalia and Bakersfield, dropped out after running for 8:43 and reaching the 67-mile checkpoint.
