Rehabbing San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain will start against the Fresno Grizzlies on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park.
The three-time National League All-Star was in Fresno’s downtown ballpark stadium Friday and the Giants made it official in the hours leading up to Saturday’s first pitch that Cain would pitch for Sacramento in the Grizzlies’ second-to-last home game of the season.
Rehabbing San Francisco Giants ace Matt Cain is expected to start against the Fresno Grizzlies on Saturday at Chukchansi Park, according to sources.
Cain, 31, has a strained lower back, landing him on the disabled list for the third time this season.
Never miss a local story.
In his 12th major league season, Cain has a career record of 101-107 with a 3.57 ERA and 1,613 strikeouts in 1,955 2/3 innings.
The big righty helped the Giants win World Series titles in 2010 and 2012 but was sidelined in 2014 when they won the title again.
Over the past two seasons, Cain has been limited by injuries and surgeries. This year, he is 4-8 with a 5.81 ERA in 17 starts.
Cain played for the Grizzlies in 2005 when Fresno served as the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate. He made a rehab start for the River Cats against the Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park.
He owns the Grizzlies franchise record for strikeouts in a season with 176 in 2005.
Cain will become the second ex-Giants ace to start against the Grizzlies this season, joining his ex-San Francisco teammate Tim Lincecum.
Lincecum, who suited up for the Grizzlies in 2007, started for the Salt Lake Bees of the Los Angeles Angels organization and threw seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against Fresno in June.

Cain started once for the River Cats earlier this season but has not pitched since landing on the disabled list Aug. 18.
Cain is in the second-to-last year of a five-year, $112.5 million contract extension, which at the time of its signing was the richest deal ever given to a right-handed pitcher.
