Split decision – The Fresno Grizzlies split a doubleheader with the Las Vegas 51s on Thursday at Chukchansi Park. Mike Hauschild suffered his worst outing since a poor showing in April, giving up six runs off eight hits in five innings in the first game as the Grizzlies lost 6-5 in a seven-inning affair. But the Grizzlies took the nightcap thanks to Jon Kemmer’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 2-1 win during another seven-inning outing. Kemmer finished the day 2 for 6 with one homer, two runs and an RBI. Fresno’s A.J. Reed and Andrew Aplin also homered, both in the first game. Brad Peacock, who started the nightcap for the Grizzlies, threw six scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Closer James Hoyt gave up a run in the seventh, but got back-to-back strikeouts and induced a groundout to consecutive at-bats to end the game.
Up next – Fresno and Las Vegas wrap up a five-game series at 7:05 p.m. Friday, with Grizzlies RH Brady Rodgers (9-3, 2.68 ERA) facing 51s LH Darin Gorski (3-1, 3.38). Rodgers, having a career year, threw seven shutout innings in his previous outing vs. Albuquerque. In addition to ranking second in the Pacific Coast League in ERA, Rodgers is tied for first with a 1.09 WHIP. Rodgers is at his best at Chukchansi Park, where he’s 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA, issuing just six walks in 60 1/3 innings.
White promoted – Grizzlies infielder Tyler White was recalled by major-league parent club Houston, a promotion that coincides with Astros starter Doug Fister (Fresno State) going on paternity leave. White began the season with the Astros before he was sent back to Triple A in mid-June. He hit .288 with 11 homers and 26 RBIs, posting a .935 OPS, in 34 games with Fresno.
Shirley signs with Tigers – LH Tommy Shirley, released by Houston on Monday, signed with the Detroit Tigers and was assigned to Double-A Erie. Shirley, 27, went 7-7 with a 5.38 ERA in 18 starts with the Grizzlies.
